One thing that brought me out of the woodwork is this year’s Philippine Blogging Awards. Now, generally speaking the current shape of the blogosphere sucks. Plagiarists abound. The atrocities that are being committed on English and Filipino grammar, proper spelling and word usage are in a scale and manner that would make the Nazis look tame in comparison. The proliferation of textese, cAmEL CaPS and l337 just because the authors think they look cool and/or cute when they use that is nothing short of cancerous. Unnecessary plugins, hideous graphics and cluttered layouts make blogs look like a post-presidential election wall. Problogging is being given a bad reputation by a bunch of attention whores badly afflicted with information coprophagia, a severe lack of creativity and plain old laziness.
However there is still hope. There exist gems in the fetid cesspool of human ideas and idiocy called the internet, and the blog of Mike ‘Fucking’ Villar is one of them.

One thing you’d notice about his blog is well, the existence of original content. Fine, the stuff he writes is politically incorrect. Crass. Tasteless. Irreverent. Perverted. Retarded. But those words are his thoughts on stuff. Whether you give a rat’s ass about the stuff he’s talking about or not, they’re not the product-and-link-pimping drivel or the failed self-depreciation that permeates the blogosphere nowadays. And in this time and age filled with mindless internet sheep driven mad by this obsession on either popularity, conformity or both, the ability to speak out your own thoughts is now sacred and rare. Never mind if he managed to offend every sensibility out there - you can never please everyone, so might as well please yourself.
Another thing of note is the way he writes. The stuff he writes may be bullshit for some, but it’s well-written balanced bullshit. Funny well-written balanced bullshit if I may say so. The right mix of irony, retardation, (pseudo-)serious stuff, self-depreciation, wit and humor sets him apart from the rest. He’s not some trying-hard ass who tried to sound intellectual by over-using highfalutin words or MS Word’s Shift-F7 function then failing big time because he/she/it didn’t even use the words properly. And the stuff he writes is actually funny if and when he wants them to be funny. Fine, some of you may not get his jokes because of your limited intellect. A lot of you will get offended by his jokes; but admit it - deep inside, a small, hidden cruel side of you wants to laugh despite the crassness of it all.
One other reason he’s got one up over a lot of personal blogs out there is the lingual and grammatical correctness. Let’s just say his English teachers would be proud that Mikey did learn something from them. And that is something a lot of blogs can’t claim to have.
Lastly, Mike Villar offers something a lot of blogs can and will never offer - the satisfaction of our inner voyeurs, the need to one-up everyone else and the much-suppressed Schadenfreude in us.
I vote for Mike ‘Fucking’ Villar. Because he’s a better retard than all of the retards out there.
