The original purpose of this so-called textese is to abbreviate words that would normally be unwiedly if you were to type the entire word for SMS, thus decreasing the time needed to type a message and increasing the number of characters sent. In Filipino, a syllabic language (uses syllables like Nihonggo; unlike English which is phonetic) this is an additional boon for it allows "multiplication" of certain syllables e.g. 'mamamaalam' (trans: to say farewell/goodbye) would translate to 'ma3alam'. For those mathematically-correct people, 'nagtutulog-tulugan' (trans: feigning sleep) would translate to ng2(2log)2an. For us tightwads, this allows us to send more or less twice or thrice the number of characters per message as opposed to typing the entire words. Am I a cheapskate? Hell yeah.
