[Pax] Oedipus
August 11, 2008One thing Oedipus realized is that he must never, ever disable the Familiarity Barrier feature of the hit MMORPG called Pax lest he meets the same fate as his friend. He promised himself that as the casket of his friend was being lowered down the grave a few weeks ago.
He was the one who discovered the lifeless body of his meatspace friend hanging from a rope. He was the one who cut the still-swinging body down in the vain hope of reviving his friend, whose body was still warm to his touch… either that or the grisly sight made him feel so cold that the corpse was even warmer than him. He was the one who browsed through the logs of Pax and determined that the Familiarity Barrier was not in place, which allowed the maximum amount of interaction and stimulation to go through his friend’s mind. And that was what killed his friend - the sudden influx of emotions and stimulations from a certain user has unbalanced his mind.
People argued that his friend was just immature as hell. But Oedipus thought otherwise. His friend seemed so stable, so grounded in real life and in-game. His friend wouldn’t resort to suicide, no way. His friend had so much hope, had so many dreams, had such a good outlook in life. How can that change in so short a span of time?
Sadly, only a small part of his brain was screaming his thoughts from his friend’s funeral a few weeks back as he proceeded to disable Pax’s Familiarity Barrier feature this fine afternoon.
