[One-shot] The Christmas Party

(Play the audio while reading for kicks. I conceptualized this as a one-act play of sorts - A/N)
That introduction gave the promise of an entire night of inner torture for him.
“Oh, this is Cathy, my friend. She’ll be joining the party later.” She motioned to the person sitting beside her. Cathy stood up, shook hands with him and sat back down perfunctorily; her eyes transitioning in a split-second from a glare (to him) that one would usually associate to a mama bear with threatened cubs behind her to coquettish doe eyes (to her) with a silent… hunger, he thought, for lack of a better term.
Fine, arguably he may have just imagined it; considering he’s got a rather imaginative mind that wasn’t a too-remote an observation. On the other hand, his gaydar hasn’t failed him yet, and the abovementioned gaydar is twinging like mad when he looks at Cathy and her. Oh. Shit.
“Guys, are we going or not?” Their officemate beckoned towards the door.

Present day: He looked across the table into her eyes, those clear brown pools of wit and humor that never failed to brighten up the shittiest of days whenever he sees them looking, waiting for him to get out of the office. They were still as clear as before, but he wondered why there’s this sense of tiredness in them. Mentally *tsk*-ing, he shook off the concern that surfaced after a long slumber. It was an unwelcome yet very familiar sentiment, and he didn’t know what to do with it other than to force it back to his subconscious where it belonged. |
Present day: She once again looked into those dark eyes that she once loved looking into during rainy afternoons while curled up against one another on the couch. It was as if she was staring into this deep, dark strange well where a warm and comforting feeling never fails to seep into whoever was looking in. Some things do never change, she bemusingly thought as a small smile fought to escape her self-control. She did succeed in squashing the smile, but the smile had the last laugh by opening up a long-locked-up vault of memories. |

May 26, 2009Man, contrary to what most humans think, still share at least one primal fear with the lower animals even in this day and age of computers, materialism and the sense of absolute control over the world - the fear of fire. Over history, Man has found ways to control this source of fear and use it to do their own bidding; using it as an efficient tool for shaping the world while holding it as far away as they can, Man is painfully aware of fire’s at-best-unpredictable nature. From campfires that drove away nocturnal hunters hungry for human flesh during the the Stone Age, to the iron cannons that lobbed steel and flame over long distances during the Renaissance to the atomic bombs that leveled Hiroshima and Nagasaki, fire in its many forms forged the world in the vision of its still-wary wielder while everyone else cowered in fear. And that fear was what he was banking on.

September 25, 2008Leaves rustle, branches creak as a lithe figure stealthily moved from one tree to another. An owl hooted with indignation, spooked at the sudden passage of something, then fell dead from the branch when it saw what passed by. Well, not really dead as in biologically dead - more like dazed, blinded and KO’ed by the sheer amount of awesomeness it witnessed. In a few hours the owl will get up and will just half-remember what it saw, just like what happens to humans when they dream a particularly good dream and not-quite-forget about it in the morning.

No, you’re not first because you’re that special to me. Fine, blood really is thicker than water, but come on, can you really say that you know me well after a quarter of a century living together under the same roof? I can’t blame you though - this materialistic society doesn’t exactly give people much choice on what to spend time on. It would have been nice if you were around for a lot of things, but I managed. Maybe I became stronger because of that, and honestly, i believe kids should be kicked out of the house after HS to fend for themselves. That’s the reason why there’s a lot of wimps around - they don’t really get to experience hardships early enough that they won’t fuck up bigger decisions later in life.Thank you for leaving me alone to fend for myself. And no, I don’t want you in my funeral. I lived alone, I will die alone.
